ROLES OF HON. MEMBERS

Role of Hon. Members of the National Assembly are categorized in three main areas, though there are additional roles they performed.

The three main roles are Legislative role, Oversight Role, Representation Role, additional include Budgetary (Financial role) which is

Legislative Role

Hon. Members make laws for the governance of our dear country. Hon. Members partake in the debate and discussion of a bill and suggest amendments to Bills to be best of the citizens. MP participates in the discussion of a bill and suggests amendments to a Government bill

Oversight Role

Hon. Members exercise control over our executive branch through scrutiny through committees like the Public Enterprises Committee, Finance and Public Account Committee, Select Committee on Education, Training and ICT, etc. they also do their oversight functions through Parliamentary interventions such Question and Answers during plenaries, Motions, Adjournment debate

Representative Role:
Hon. Members serve as the voice of their constituents. MPs raise issues of their people/constituency during sessions through questions and debates. Hon. Representatives also play in the implementation of projects at their constituencies/district levels by following up on projects at the executive level, this is mostly be meeting with a Minister responsible.

Budgetary/financial role

No financial transaction can take place without the approval of the Parliaments, that is to say no tax can be levied or expenditure incurred without the final approval of the Hon. Members of the National Assembly. Annually the Draft Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure is submitted to the National Assembly for the scrutiny of MPs for final approval and consumption of the Executive.

Hon. Members of the National Assembly also approve emergencies under three categories (national, state and financial) and example during the 2016-2017 Political Impasse, Hon. Members passed the state of Emergency to put the situation under control.
